If you are into your grilling, you’ll undoubtedly hear of Pit Boss. They are a big name well known for producing high quality and really solid grills. Their catchphrase is ‘bigger, hotter heavier’… But how true is that? Let’s take a look at its features and find out…

Size and Weight

Well, when Pit Boss said “bigger,” we are inclined to believe them. The grill is 23” long and just a fraction under 20” deep. As portable grills go, that isn’t the smallest we have seen. Quite simply put, for a portable gas grill, this thing is pretty big.

If you are looking to cook for a medium to large party, it certainly fits the bill. As a result of its size, you will find a rather large cooking chamber. The height of the cooking chamber is 12”. This vertical expanse would make it ideal for grilling things a little taller than burgers. So if you are looking to cook ribs, whole chicken, or anything with a bit of height, you shouldn’t have a problem.

When it comes to weight, this isn’t the lightest portable grill out there. Weighing in at 23lbs (not including the gas bottle), you’d better have a cold beer waiting when you’ve carried to where you want to cook.

How Portable is the Pit Boss 75275 Stainless Steel Grill?

This grill could be classed as portable. However, we will say that it depends on what you want from a ‘portable grill’?

If you were looking for a good gas grill for an RV or tailgate party, this would make an absolutely superb choice. It can fold down to be pretty compact. The grill features folding legs and has two handy side-mounted clips perfect for securing the substantial lid while it is in transit.

It would also be an excellent portable grill if you were looking to use it in your garden. It is light enough to carry short distances and can pretty much be positioned anywhere.

If you require a super mobile grill, it might not be the most ideal choice.

The grill lacks any kind of dedicated carry handles. This, combined with the weight, might make it difficult to carry any appreciable distance (especially when it is hot). When it is locked, you could carry it by the lid handle; however, you may find that it tends to lean a little in transit due to the weight difference between the cooking chamber and lid.

However, what it lacks in true portability, it more than makes up for in performance.

The Pit Boss Cooking Surface

Ok, so you’ve seen the downside with regards to portability. But here’s the good news.

The cooking surface on this grill is huge. Pit Boss was telling the truth when they said “bigger”. How huge? Well, you’ll find an area just shy of 270² Inches. To put that in grilling terms, that’s around 16 hamburgers—plenty of room for a medium to large party.

The cooking grate is made of stainless steel. One key advantage of this is that it keeps the weight down, adding slightly to the Pit Boss’s portability. The downside is that you might not get as hard a sear as other cooking grate types (such as porcelain enamel).

The cooking surface is basic and single level. There is no warming rack. However, with the dual burners and easy temperature control, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Cooking on the Pit Boss Two-Burner Portable Gas Grill

Here is where the Pit Boss Portable Grill does truly shine. Cooking on this grill is a joy. It has a few features that make it great.

First, as the name of the grill suggests,’ you’ll find two powerful burners. These burners can be independently controlled, giving you a great degree of flexibility in how you cook your food. You can whack both up to full to create an inferno perfect for fast searing meat and getting those signature stripes. Alternatively, you can create a cooler side, perfect for keeping food warm or reverse searing.

Due to the substantial lid, you will also be able to dial it down and cook ‘low and slow’. The heat setting is easily adjusted by two front-mounted nobs that will let you tweak the heat to a high degree of accuracy.

The above is further enabled by a feature that we really like. The Pit Boss portable grill also features an integrated thermometer, perfect for creating an ‘oven style’ cooking environment. So if you are looking to roast or bake, it should be ideal.

One thing that portable gas grills lack, and gas grills with stainless steel cooking grates specifically, is that smoky flavor. With portable grills such as the Weber Q2200, the cast iron cooking grates create a little smoke, perfect for flavoring meat. When it comes to flavor, this grill is perhaps just a little average.

With regards to ease of cooking, igniting the grill couldn’t be easier. It features an electric push to start button. Just connect the gas, turn your selection to the desired setting, and push. It is really easy.

Is the Pit Boss Portable Grill Easy to Clean?

There’s only one thing worse than having to carry a portable grill… Having to carry a dirty portable grill. Accumulations of soot and fatty deposits can spoil your shirt and be dangerous if they are allowed to build up, so you want something easy to clean. How does the Pit Boss 75275 fare in the cleaning department?

Well, we are glad to say the Pit Boss is pretty easy to clean.

Located at the bottom of the cooking chamber, you will find a drain hole that allows fat and drips to egress. However, ensure that you place a receptacle underneath to avoid damaging the surface underneath the grill. We wish that Pit Boss had included some kind of rack or system to collect this as part of the unit.

When you see the Pit Boss portable grill, one standout feature is the shiny stainless-steel finish. Mirrored in the cooking surface, this material is really easy to clean and is pretty resistant to even the harshest cleaning products, so if you like to give your grill an annual deep clean, it would be ideal.

One excellent feature that you don’t often see is that the gas burner rings can be removed. There are even instructions provided with the unit to tell you how to do this. It isn’t something that you will want to do every time, but there is enough room under the rings to reach with a brush or sponge for a quick once over after your party has ended.
